Jesus and Harry Stamper
Yesterday, i re-watched a decade-old movie with my husband. The movie's name is Armageddon.
For those of you who have not seen or don't remember this movie, i will sum up the parts that relate to this post.
In the movie, it comes to the attention of NASA that a literally earth-shattering-sized asteroid is headed directly for Earth. The scheme is derived to send men to the asteroid to drill a hole in it, in which a nuclear bomb will be inserted and detonated. According to the plan this precisely placed nuclear bomb will split the asteroid in two pieces, and the earth will be saved.
A man named Harry Stamper, who is considered by others in his field to be the world's best oil driller, is recruited to help NASA figure out how to drill an 800 foot hole in an asteroid and is eventually recruited, along with his team of unlikely suspects, to go to space with NASA and drill the necessary hole.
In the end *spoiler alert* the trigger for the bomb malfunctions because of a rock storm on the asteroid, and Harry Stamper remains behind to detonate the bomb and thus, save all of mankind from annihilation.
After the movie, James and i mused about what a legend someone like that would be and how every school on the planet would be named after him. Every person on the planet would owe their life to this guy!
After the movie was over, i was reading in Revelation before bed.
-Revelation 5:9
It's so easy for us, as humans, to appreciate the imaginary sacrifice of the character Harry Stamper. Saving the earth from imminent death and destruction seems like a big deal.
But Jesus gave His life to save all of mankind's souls, from all generations, from true death, from the bondage of sin, and to give them the opportunity to live forever. And He did it on purpose. It wasn't an afterthought for Jesus. It was His whole earthly life's mission. The plan was, from the beginning, that He would do what no one else could do and make an eternal way of escape.
This stuff is kind of abstract to us, i think. Our limited minds can't really comprehend what it means to have your soul saved for eternity. But we will be able to one day. The angels understand. Revelation 5 also says that "Myriads of myriads and thousands of thousands" of angels repeat, "Worthy is the Lamb that was slain to receive power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and glory and blessing." If you read this portion of Revelation, you get the impression that they, the heavenly hosts, they GET it.
So although, it probably seems a little, well...nevermind i'm sure it seems entirely blasphemous to compare Harry Stamper to Jesus. But i'm just trying to bring something incomprehensible down to a level i can sort of understand.
I think if Oscar (another character in the movie) were going to explain it, he would say something like, "you know how Harry saved everyone on the whole earth from being tragically destroyed by this horrible earth-ending asteroid? Well, Jesus is like that! only times a billion times a billion, times infinity and then a billion again! It's like so big you can't wrap your head around it. But it's real, man! It's really REAL! Yeah, it's Harry times like a googootrillion."
***Disclaimer: the author of this blog in no way means to insinuate that anyone can learn more about Jesus by watching the movie, Armageddon. Probably the bulk of any biblical comparison available has been provided to you in this blog entry.

Worthy are You to take the book and to break its seals ; for You were slain, and purchased for God with Your blood men from every tribe and tongue and people and nation.
