Who are you?
I (and i assume pretty much anyone who writes about their lives and makes their writing available to the entirety of the planet, via the internet) really appreciate knowing that people are reading what i write . . . and hopefully not scoffing.
Because i am interested in having peeps read, i install things like statcounter on my blog so that i can see how many people are checking me out - and sometimes what they're reading and how many times. What i can't tell, especially if you don't comment, is who you are and why you're reading.
And maybe you don't want me to know. That's cool.
The other night, i got curious about an influx of new followers i see on my profile. So i went to each followers profile to see what i could see. But for most of you, there was still very little information.
Bear with me, i'm coming to a point here.
The point: A few minutes ago, i learned that today, January 14, 2011, has been designated, by the influential authorities of the blogosphere, "National Delurking Day." This means that this day is specially set aside for those of you who lurk (read but don't comment) and those of you who don't lurk, to not lurk, or continue not lurking.
Meaning, it would tickle me 3 shades of orange if you quiet readers would say hello. You don't have to sign in. You can comment as anonymous. I would also love it if those of you who already comment from time to time, would comment today.
You don't have to say anything special, but if you need help thinking of something to say, i would love to know why you read this blog, or which types of posts you enjoy the most, or which types of posts you can't stand to read, or if you like my chickens and haven't been getting enough of that lately, or if you write your own blog and want to post a link, or if your favorite color is . . . whatever your favorite color is, 'cause i think that kind of info tells lots about a person. Say whatever you want. I'm not picky. But if it's obscene, i'll have to delete it. And i promise to read each and every comment. I always read every comment. It's what i do.
One more thing. While we're doing this, the other day, i got like 3000 hits on my bread making post. Since i don't normally reach 3000 people, or any thousand people, i'm very curious to know on what website or whatever a link to that post was placed to generate so much traffic on my tiny little 60-hits-in-one-day-is-huge personal blog.
One other more thing. I really appreciate you. And to get things started, my favorite color is orange. ;)

My "favorite color" has always been a contentious issue for me, always being the little "colored" kid in every school that I went to growing up. (Realizing that only once was that term *actually* used, but the facts of the demographics remain the same.) I've always been different, and always wanted to fit in -- so when people would ask these common types of questions, I always would pick the color that I thought they wanted to hear. "Pink" and "Purple" were not the acceptable answers, despite my affinity for those softer hues. "Grey" or "Black" I was told are not actually colors at a all. "White" again is rejected because it's either the absence of color (art) or the presence of all colors (light) -- so I am stuck with the pedestrian "blue, because that's the BOYS color." I really don't have a favorite color anymore, because I'm tired of the arguments, the explanations and justifications. If we're picking markers for a game, I'll take whichever one no one else wants.
ReplyDeleteWho am I? I am your Dad and I read your post because I love finding out what is going on in your life.
ReplyDeleteLove You Tink.
@cheojackson Thank you for commenting, and that is the saddest favorite color story i have ever heard. I never knew that question could be quite that deep. I have a whole new insight into you and your psyche that i never had before. ;)
ReplyDelete@anonymous daddy, i love you too, and it makes me really happy that you read what i write. <3
Hi Beth. I read your blog because I want to know what's going on in your life and in your neck of the woods. And because I like how you write. And because you are funny and witty and smart. And just because I love you,
ReplyDeleteMom.
@anonymous mom, that's quite the ego boost! Thanks! And i love you too!
ReplyDeleteI am a former Texan who has been enjoying your recipe posts. I now live in Colorado with my husband and 3 little (maybe not so little) Texans according to their Birth Certificates.
ReplyDeleteI read your blog, because I like you and you're interesting, and I will never ever have a farm or a chicken or go outdoors for an extended period of time, because I HATE outside, so I live vicariously through you...
ReplyDeleteHi, I read your blog because you are cool. Texas is cool. Bread making is cool. And I'm waiting for another installment on the rabbit-raising-for-food story.....
ReplyDelete@Karen604, i always wonder if anyone likes the recipe posts or if they're just for my own entertainment. I'll have to start posting those more regularly. Oh, and i prefer the term "displaced Texan." It's kind of like the marines; there's no such thing as a former Texan. ;)
ReplyDelete@♪essica, that's a very nice thing to say. Thank you so much, and i'll try to remember to do really cool outside stuff on your behalf. Ha!
I can't remember how I came across your blog, but I did and decided to hang around. I suppose I like the simplicity of what you write. And I love it that your mom and dad are fans of your blog; mine are my biggest followers at http://ifmylifewereabookramblings.blogspot.com/ (if you are so inclined to stop by).
ReplyDeleteAnd by the way, my favorite color is pink. Not hot pink or peptobismal pink... just a nice shade of light pink.
@Bonnie@TheFragileXFiles, the rabbits are a very slow-going saga. I'll do an update soon. It's on my list (thanks to you). BTW, i love the name of your blog. Very clever. And your boys are beautiful. =D
ReplyDeleteBeth, my favorite color is pink :) I love to read your blog to see what you are working on, cooking, doing with your chickens or hearing about your life and beliefs.
ReplyDeleteAmy :)
@Angela, it is a great blessing to have parents who are so interested in your life. And i love how specific you are about your favorite color. I will be checking out your blog. I love the name.
ReplyDelete@Amy, thank you for commenting. You are so good about commenting regularly, and that is so nice. You're also so wonderful about responding to your readers' comments. I'm going to have to work on that particular skill.
Idon't remember how I came across your blog, butI found it interesting because you had a post about bread and I love making bread. You also stated you are a follower of Christ and so am I. You also like farming and I do too! I love chickens so more of that please. We recently sold our farm and house because of my husbands job(to move to another area) and I had to get rid of all my animals but a few dogs and cats and I am having withdrawals. I am living the farming life vicariously through you! And my favorite color is red.
ReplyDeleteOh, and i made the cinnamon bread (minus raisins) and it ROCKED!
ReplyDelete@franj, we have a lot in common, don't we? Groovy. How sad to leave your farm; i'm not sure i wouldn't have insisted on staying behind with the animals...ok, not really. But i would be having withdrawals too. So happy to meet you! Thanks for commenting! =D
ReplyDelete@franj, isn't cinnamon bread amazing! And so simple. Yummm.
ReplyDeletePurple.
ReplyDeleteAnd because i like you. And ialsowannabeafarmer. Your blog gives me a glimpse of how my growing family is gonna have to live one day just to feed all these boys...=) BTW...ever think of getting a cow? <3
@lisa, HI! We regularly dream of getting a cow, or cows, and of making our own butter and cheese and buttermilk, and of having to milk a cow, or cows, twice a day. But our small acreage, partially woods, isn't enough to support cows - at least not any regular cows. Hey, you should bring the boys out one day and let them run around and chase chickens. That would be grand fun. =D <3
ReplyDeleteAnd i would never have guessed it was purple.
I found you thanks to Jess Clark - I'm a wannabeTexan and just enjoy reading about other people's lives because it shows me I'm not alone. I live vicariously through farming/homey people like you because I generally live like a nomad, I enjoy reading about what you do to make your place "home" & all your animals - Jelly & the dogs, the chix, the rabbits...
ReplyDeleteI even enjoy the personal "deep" blogs that open a window into your life and expose the person who is holding on to Jesus to get her through.
I'm a missionary and currently living in Africa & recipes are good, but I usually can't find a lot of ingredients, plus I'm learning how to bake @ high altitude - <3 keep writing!
@misskerri, i LOVE that you read my blog, even though you're in Africa, and i love that you're posting on your blog from Africa too. Thank you so much for reading!
ReplyDeleteHi! I found your site when Betty Crocker linked your breadmaking post. I was interested in your tips, but I found that you're also a believer, so I am now hooked on your blog. Thank you for your posts on your history, as well as baking. I am excited to read more of your posts.
ReplyDelete@Ani, i'm still completely boggled about how my post was picked up by Betty Crocker, but i'm very happy about it, especially since it brought you here. Thanks so much for reading! =D
ReplyDeleteHi Beth, I am totally hooked on your blog. You articulate so well that its like watching an episode of my favorite series every time you post. I am a Proverbs 31/farmwoman wanna-be and have learned so much from you. Your family speaks so highly of your testimony as a wife to your GSSH. We have some of the same farmish goals. You have an amazing smile and your eyes twinkle with the love of Jesus. I consider it an honor to know you and learn more about you.
ReplyDeleteFavorite color? Can't say there's just one. Grey makes me feel stable. Orange - warm. Barn red - homey. Yellow - cheerful. Purple - peaceful and loved.
That's me :)
@Robin Helms, you say the nicest things! Thank you for your compliments. I look forward to getting to know you better. I hope that you and and your daughter will come out one day soon and visit. Maybe you can even take home some chickens. ;) Thank you so much for your friendship and your readership.
ReplyDelete@Patsy, hi cuz! I love you, and i'm really enjoying getting to know you, even if it is a little late. <3
ReplyDeleteI found you on the 11th of Januare when Betty Crocker's Facebook page posted about your bread making recipe - one I am going to try to accomplish today. I stayed because you are literally witty and literarily charming... not really sure if that is a word but I'm deeming it one today.
ReplyDeleteI know I'm a bit late but hey - I know how you feel about wanting to know if people are reading your blog - I'm in the same boat. Job well done and I can't wait to read what you're up to next.
@Peppermint Mocha Mama, it makes me very excited to see readers benefiting from my loaves in the kitchen. Thank you so much for sticking around after the bread. ;) I hope your bread goes very well today. If the weather there is anything like it is here, today is a great day for baking bread.
ReplyDeleteI read your stuff because I have known you since I was a kid and Darnit, I like you... :)
ReplyDeleteYou and I are similar on finding our way back to our roots. I take great accomplishment even if it took me all day or much longer to do something homemade. I like making my own breads (when I can) and food because I don't like ingredients I can't pronounce. You inspire me to keep on blogging. I drop off the blog world about every 9 months.
@Merit, yay! I like you too! =D And you really should blog more often. I love your crocheting and especially your banjo videos. And i love having a cohort in the "old ways."
ReplyDeleteI read your blog because I like you and love to read about what is happening in your's and GSSH's lives. Unfortunately I am not one who reads daily - I dont seem to get on the computer that much any more, however when I do I try to stop by your blog and see what's happening (or not happening - rabbits). I will try to be more deliberate about commenting when I do get a chance to read :)
ReplyDeleteMy favorite color is Kelly Green and it makes me HAPPY! I have discovered after observing one driving down the road that although I've always thought I would love to have a Kelly Green colored car... I really do not :)
@Dwyer, i love you and miss you horribly. Your Kelly Green car "story" cracked me up out loud! =D
ReplyDeleteFew days late to the party, but, here goes: I found your blog from your tagline on a certain self-sufficiency forum ;-) It's one of the first blogs I started reading, and I continue to read it because we have similar beliefs and hopes and dreams :-) Officially my favorite color is green (sage/olive type shade), but my son is always asking me why don't I just go ahead and change it to pink, since I have so much pink clothing/accessories ;-)
ReplyDelete@bethanial11, that's hilarious. . . your son getting suspicious about your real favorite color. Kids know things. =D
ReplyDeleteI found your blog because I'm interested in beekeeping, and I watch for anyone who mentions it...can't remember how I found it originally.
ReplyDelete@Gary Sieling, thanks for commenting. I'm sorry there hasn't been more about beekeeping. It's urgent on our minds, but somehow there's always something more urgent. We're bound and determined to get to it this year though. Hope you'll stick around. =D
ReplyDeleteI found your blog when it was posted on Betty Crocker's Facebook page (on breadbaking). I love your humor. It's always been a dream of mine to be an actual farmer and be self-sustaining, so it's fun to read about your adventures! I also love your recipes, we are having the upside-down mushroom egg recipe tonight for dinner!
ReplyDeleteP.S. I am not religous, unlike posts mentioned above, just thought you'd like to know for demographic resons :-D,. Sorry for posting as 'Anonymous', just easier to get the comment in that way!
ReplyDeleteHi Anonymous,
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for commenting and for complimenting my sense of humor. I'm always surprised by that one, but thankful for it just the same. And i'm doubly excited that you're having the upside down mushroom eggs! I have not had them in a while, myself, and i'm a little jealous. Thanks so much for reading! =D
P.S. It is cool to know that i'm reaching a non-religious demographic. =D Thank you.
